Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Exactech recall?
In 2022, Exactech recalled over 200,000 knee, hip, and ankle implants due to defective packaging. The polyethylene inserts (plastic components) were stored in vacuum bags that lacked a critical oxygen barrier layer. This caused the plastic to oxidize and degrade before implantation, leading to premature device failure in patients.
Which Exactech devices are affected?
The recall covers:
- Knee: Optetrak, Optetrak Logic, Truliant, Truliant XR
- Hip: Connexion GXL acetabular liners
- Ankle: Vantage Total Ankle System
How do I know if my implant is affected?
Your surgical records will identify the specific device used. The serial number can be cross-referenced against the official recall list. If you have any of the products listed above, your implant may be affected.
What problems do affected implants cause?
The defective packaging leads to:
- Premature device failure (years instead of decades)
- Implant loosening as plastic wears away
- Bone loss (osteolysis) from inflammatory response
- Pain and reduced mobility
- Need for revision surgery
My implant feels fine — should I be concerned?
Possibly. The damage from oxidation may not be immediately apparent. Symptoms can develop gradually over time. Talk to your doctor about monitoring your implant if it's on the recall list, even if you currently feel well.
I haven't had revision surgery — can I still file?
Yes, but cases involving revision surgery typically have higher value. If you have documented problems with your implant — pain, instability, imaging showing wear — you may still have a claim.
How much does it cost to file?
Nothing upfront. Exactech attorneys work on contingency. You pay nothing unless you receive compensation.
How long will the lawsuit take?
The Exactech MDL is in active litigation. Bellwether trials are expected in 2026-2027. Full resolution for most claimants is likely 2-4 years from filing.
Will I have to testify?
Most plaintiffs will not need to testify. Only a small number of cases are selected for bellwether trials.
What if my surgery was years ago?
Many state courts apply a "discovery rule" — the statute of limitations may start when you connected your problems to the recall, not when surgery occurred. This means older cases may still be eligible.
Can I file if my doctor said it wasn't the implant's fault?
Yes. The recall is based on documented packaging defects. Even if your doctor initially attributed problems to other causes, the recall provides a foundation for your claim.
Will filing affect my future medical care?
No. Filing a lawsuit is independent of your medical care. Your relationship with your doctor and treatment options are not affected.
What if my implant is removed during revision surgery?
Ask your surgeon if you can keep the removed components. They can be valuable physical evidence in your case. Even without the device, medical records and imaging are sufficient.
Can family members file for someone who passed away?
Yes. If a loved one died from complications related to a recalled Exactech implant or surgical complications during revision, family members may file wrongful death claims.
I had a hip and knee replacement — does both affect my case?
If both were Exactech and both are on the recall list, you may have separate claims for each device.
What if my implant was Exactech but not on the recall list?
The recall has been expanded multiple times. If your device isn't currently listed, an attorney can advise whether it might be added or whether you have other claims.
