Hair Relaxer Lawsuit Overview
Last updated: April 9, 2026
What Is the Hair Relaxer Lawsuit?
Thousands of women are filing lawsuits against major cosmetics companies alleging that chemical hair straightening and relaxer products caused them to develop uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids.
The lawsuits target manufacturers including L'Oreal, Revlon, Namaste Laboratories (ORS), Strength of Nature, and others who produced and marketed these products for decades without adequately warning consumers about the cancer risk.
The Science Behind the Claims
A groundbreaking 2022 study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that women who frequently used chemical hair straightening products had a significantly elevated risk of uterine cancer:
- Women who used hair straighteners more than 4 times per year had approximately 2.5 times the risk of developing uterine cancer compared to non-users
- The study followed nearly 34,000 women ages 35-74 over more than a decade
- No significant associations were found with other hair products (dyes, bleach, highlights, perms)
Additional research has identified endocrine-disrupting chemicals in hair relaxer products, including:
- Formaldehyde — a known carcinogen
- Phthalates — linked to hormonal disruption
- Parabens — associated with estrogen-mimicking activity
- Bisphenol A (BPA) — a known endocrine disruptor
These chemicals can be absorbed through the scalp — particularly when the skin is damaged from chemical burns, which are common with relaxer use.
Who Is Most Affected?
This lawsuit disproportionately impacts Black women, who have historically used chemical hair straighteners and relaxers at significantly higher rates than other demographic groups. Studies indicate that over 50% of Black women have used hair relaxers, often beginning in childhood.
The NIH researchers specifically noted that "these findings may be especially relevant for Black women" who use these products more frequently and often start at younger ages.
What Are Plaintiffs Alleging?
The lawsuits allege that manufacturers:
- Knew or should have known about the endocrine-disrupting chemicals in their products
- Failed to warn consumers about the cancer and reproductive health risks
- Marketed aggressively to Black women and girls without disclosing dangers
- Prioritized profits over conducting adequate safety testing
- Continued selling products containing known carcinogens
Current Status of the Litigation
The Hair Relaxer litigation is consolidated as MDL 3060 in the Northern District of Illinois, before Judge Mary M. Dow.
- Over 8,000 cases pending in the MDL
- Bellwether trials being scheduled for 2026
- No global settlement has been reached
- New cases continue to be filed as awareness grows
- Companies have not recalled products or changed formulations
